Create Ranking Question

Q. How do I build a question that requires the respondent to rank their top three choices from a list.

A. A SurveyWriter question type is available for this function. 

1. Create a new question. 
2. From the Select a Question Type menu, select Answer Grid.
3. Select Ranking Text Boxes.
4. When the Options screen pops up, set your Minimum Rank Number to 1 and your Maximum Rank Number to 3.

Note: DO NOT MAKE it a Required Question. This would force SurveyWriter to make sure all options had a rank number.

5. Save your Options.
6. From the Build Answer Options menu, add your row labels into the Row Labels screen.
7. Since you only have one column to be ranked, you do not need a Column Label. To continue without having any Column Labels, enter a double colon "::" into the Column Label screen.
8. Make any adjustment in column size using Build Answer Options > Format Answer Option.
9. Save the question.
   
   The Ranking question created above displays a list of items to the respondents. Next to each item is a text box. The respondent is required to assign a value of 1, 2, or 3 to three of the items. SurveyWriter verifies that only three items are selected, and that no item has a duplicate ranking number.
